2020 Renault Clio Review: The Supermini King Reclaims Its Crown

Introduction: A Legacy Continued

For three decades, the Renault Clio has been a cornerstone of the European automotive landscape. Since its debut in 1990, over 15 million units have found homes globally, making it Renault’s best-selling model of all time. When it came time to develop the fifth-generation (Clio V) for the 2020 model year, the French automaker faced a monumental challenge. How do you improve a car that already dominates the supermini sales charts?

Renault’s strategy was simple yet highly execution-dependent: keep the exterior evolutionary while completely revolutionizing the interior and underpinning it with an all-new platform. Competing against formidable rivals like the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and the stylish Peugeot 208, the 2020 Renault Clio needed to be more than just a sensible city car. It had to feel premium, drive maturely, and offer cutting-edge technology.

Exterior Styling: Familiar Yet Refined

At first glance, you might mistake the 2020 Clio for its predecessor. Renault openly admits that the exterior design of the fourth-generation model was highly praised by customers, so they chose to refine rather than reinvent. However, look closer, and you will find that every single body panel is entirely new.

Built on the alliance’s highly versatile CMF-B platform, the 2020 Clio is actually 12mm shorter than the outgoing model, but it is wider and sits lower. This gives it a more purposeful, planted stance. Up front, the nose features a larger Renault diamond emblem and standard-fit full LED headlights across all trim levels, complete with the brand's signature C-shaped daytime running lights. The hood gets more aggressive creases, and the rear door handles remain hidden in the C-pillar to maintain a sleek, coupe-like profile. It is an exercise in elegant restraint that ages incredibly well.

Interior Revolution: The "Smart Cockpit"

While the exterior is a gentle evolution, stepping inside the 2020 Renault Clio is a true revelation. The previous generation was often criticized for its abundance of hard, scratchy plastics. Renault addressed this feedback head-on by executing one of the most dramatic cabin upgrades in supermini history.

Dubbed the "Smart Cockpit," the dashboard is oriented toward the driver and features high-quality, soft-touch materials on almost every surface you regularly touch. The highlight of the cabin is the optional 9.3-inch portrait-oriented Easy Link touchscreen infotainment system, which resembles an iPad mounted on the dash. It is crisp, responsive, and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Complementing this is a digital driver’s display (available in 7-inch or 10-inch sizes) that replaces traditional analog dials, elevating the cabin to a premium class standard.

Ergonomics have also been vastly improved. The climate controls are physical, tactile dials located beneath the screen, meaning you do not have to dig through menus to adjust the cabin temperature while driving. The seats offer excellent lateral support and comfort, making long-distance journeys far less taxing.

Engine Lineup and Performance

Under the hood, the 2020 Renault Clio offers a diverse range of powertrains designed to suit different driving profiles. The entry-level options include naturally aspirated three-cylinder gasoline engines (SCe 65 and SCe 75), which are best suited for strictly urban environments.

For most buyers, the sweet spot in the lineup is the TCe 100. This 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine produces 100 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque. It offers a punchy mid-range, making highway overtaking painless while returning excellent fuel economy. For those seeking more performance, the TCe 130 pairs a 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with a smooth 7-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission. Diesel buyers are also catered to with the highly efficient Blue dCi units, which are ideal for high-mileage commuters.

Ride, Handling, and Refinement

The transition to the CMF-B platform has yielded massive benefits for the Clio’s driving dynamics. The chassis is stiffer and lighter, which translates to a much more composed ride. Around town, the steering is light and effortless, making tight parking maneuvers a breeze. On winding country roads, the Clio offers plenty of grip and minimal body roll, though it prioritizes comfort and stability over the ultimate agility of a Ford Fiesta.

Where the 2020 Clio truly shines is in its refinement. Renault engineers went to great lengths to reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels. With thicker glass, improved door seals, and better sound insulation in the engine bay, the cabin remains remarkably quiet at highway speeds. It rides with the maturity and composure of a car from the class above.

Practicality, Boot Space, and Safety

Despite being slightly shorter on the outside, clever packaging means the 2020 Clio is more practical than ever. It boasts a class-leading boot capacity of 391 liters (VDA) for the gasoline models, which actually eclipses several cars in the larger compact hatchback segment. A movable boot floor allows you to choose between a flat loading lip or maximum cargo volume.

Rear passenger space is decent, though the sloping roofline and thick C-pillars mean taller passengers might find headroom and rear visibility slightly compromised. However, knee room is adequate for average-sized adults on shorter trips.

On the safety front, the Clio V earned a glowing five-star rating from Euro NCAP. It comes packed with active safety technology as standard, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Lane Departure Warning.

Verdict: Still the Benchmark?

The 2020 Renault Clio is a masterclass in how to update a successful product. By polishing the exterior styling and focusing their budget on a class-leading interior, Renault has created a supermini that feels genuinely premium without the premium price tag. It is comfortable, quiet, packed with advanced technology, and incredibly practical. While driving enthusiasts might still lean toward the Ford Fiesta for pure chassis dynamics, the Clio offers the best all-around package in the supermini segment today.

Gila sih Clio baru emang cakep parah desainnya. Di Eropa laku keras, tapi masuk Indonesia bakal overprice ga ya? Pengen banget pdhal.

Rajanya supermini sih bener, tapi kalo masuk sini paling kalah pamor sama Yaris atau City Hatchback. 3S Renault di Indo masih PR bgt cuy.
