2021 Cupra Formentor Review: A Bold Statement of Performance and Style

Introduction: The Birth of a Standalone Cupra

For years, the "Cupra" name was reserved for the most potent, track-focused versions of SEAT's mainstream hatchbacks. However, in 2018, the Spanish manufacturer made a bold decision to spin Cupra off into its own standalone performance brand. While early efforts like the Cupra Ateca and Cupra Leon were heavily based on existing SEAT models, the 2021 Cupra Formentor represents a massive milestone: it is the brand's first-ever bespoke vehicle. Named after the wild and rugged peninsula on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the Formentor is a stylish, high-performance coupe-crossover designed to capture the hearts of driving enthusiasts who need a touch of daily practicality.

Exterior Design: A Striking Coupe-SUV Silhouette

The 2021 Cupra Formentor immediately commands attention on the road, successfully carving out a unique visual identity that distances it from the standard Volkswagen Group family look. It features an aggressive, low-slung stance that blurs the line between a traditional hot hatchback and a compact SUV. Up front, a prominent hexagonal grille housing the copper-colored Cupra tribal badge is flanked by sharp, angular LED headlights and deep air intakes.

Sculpted character lines run along the side profile, emphasizing the muscular rear haunches. The sloping roofline tapers elegantly toward the rear, culminating in a dramatic coast-to-coast LED light bar that performs a welcoming animation when you unlock the vehicle. On the high-performance VZ variants, a sporty rear diffuser is framed by quad exhaust tips, leaving no doubt about the vehicle's athletic intentions. Available in striking matte paint finishes like Petrol Blue and Magnetic Grey, the Formentor looks sophisticated, premium, and undeniably aggressive.

Interior and Technology: Sporty Luxury and Digital Focus

Step inside the cabin, and the Formentor continues to impress with a driver-centric layout that balances premium materials with modern technology. The first things you notice are the copper accents scattered throughout the cabin—from the stitching on the dashboard to the surrounds of the air vents. The flat-bottomed sports steering wheel feels excellent to hold and, on higher trims, features dedicated satellite buttons for starting the engine and toggling through the drive modes.

The dashboard is dominated by a crisp 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system running the latest MIB3 software. While the screen is visually stunning with sharp graphics and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, the touch-sensitive sliders for the volume and temperature control can be finicky to use, especially on the move. Fortunately, a highly customizable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit instrument cluster sits behind the wheel, offering clear readouts of performance metrics, navigation maps, and driver assistance systems.

Despite its sloping roofline, the Formentor offers decent practical utility. Front passengers enjoy supportive, deeply bolstered bucket seats that keep them firmly in place during spirited cornering. Rear passenger legroom is surprisingly generous, though taller occupants might find headroom slightly compromised by the panoramic sunroof. The boot offers a respectable 420 liters of cargo space in the all-wheel-drive models, which expands significantly when the rear seats are folded flat.

Powertrain and Performance: Unleashing the 310-HP Beast

While the Formentor is available with a variety of engines, including plug-in hybrids, the star of the show is the flagship VZ (derived from the Spanish word "Veloz," meaning fast). Under the hood of the top-tier 2021 Cupra Formentor VZ lies the tried-and-tested 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, tuned to deliver a potent 310 PS (306 horsepower) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

Power is routed to all four wheels via a fast-shifting seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and Cupra's 4Drive all-wheel-drive system. This combination allows the Formentor to rocket from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in a mere 4.9 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The engine pulls strongly across the rev range, accompanied by a sporty, albeit partially synthesized, exhaust note that pops and crackles when the car is placed in its most aggressive "Cupra" driving mode.

Behind the Wheel: Dynamic and Agile Handling

Built on the Volkswagen Group's highly versatile MQB Evo platform, the Formentor benefits from a rigid chassis and a sophisticated suspension setup. Standard on the high-performance models is the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system, which features adaptive dampers that can be adjusted across 15 distinct settings, ranging from soft and compliant to track-ready stiffness.

In Comfort mode, the Formentor behaves like a refined daily cruiser, soaking up road imperfections with ease. Toggle the drive selector into Sport or Cupra mode, however, and the vehicle transforms. The steering weights up, the throttle response sharpens, and the dampers stiffen to minimize body roll. Despite its slightly elevated ride height compared to a traditional hot hatch, the Formentor corners with remarkable flat-footed agility. The 4Drive system provides immense grip, clawing the car out of tight corners with confidence and minimal understeer. It feels light on its feet, offering a level of driver engagement that easily rivals more expensive premium competitors like the BMW X2 M35i or the Audi SQ3.

Verdict: A Compelling Alternative to the Status Quo

The 2021 Cupra Formentor is a triumphant debut for the standalone Spanish brand. It successfully bridges the gap between the raw excitement of a hot hatchback and the elevated driving position and practicality of a compact SUV. While the touch-sensitive interior controls require a bit of patience, they do little to detract from what is otherwise an incredibly compelling package. If you are looking for a performance crossover that stands out from the crowd with striking design, engaging dynamics, and genuine everyday usability, the Cupra Formentor deserves to be at the top of your shortlist.

Gokil sih Cupra Formentor! Desainnya agresif parah, beda kelas sama SUV mainstream. Sayang di Indo jarang banget yang punya, padahal spek dan performanya mantep bener.
