Honda Criticizes Chinese Electric Sedans for Superficial Designs; Unveils “Saloon” Concept with Ambitious Plans

Chinese cars have come a long way from being industry underdogs, with both quality and design making significant strides. However, Honda’s e-mobility design division creative director and general manager, Daisuke Tsutamori, remains candid about what he perceives as a flaw in Chinese electric sedans.

In a recent interview with Automotive News Europe, Tsutamori commented on the design of Chinese electric sedans, stating, “In China, you have seen a lot of further refinement of that kind of styling. But it is very superficial. Refined but superficial. Honda wanted to come up with something that was simpler, more essential.”

Tsutamori highlighted Honda’s unique approach with the unveiling of the “Saloon” concept earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. The concept, set to hit North America in 2026, boasts a sleek and edgy design that Tsutamori believes carries a genuine “wow factor.”

While acknowledging the influence of iconic designer Marcello Gandini on the Saloon’s design, Tsutamori emphasized Honda’s commitment to reflecting its own values in a new and distinctive way. The production version of the Saloon is expected to retain 90 percent of the concept’s styling, promising a flagship model with a dedicated electric platform underpinning Honda’s “0 Series” lineup of EVs.

Honda’s ambitious plans for the Saloon include a surprisingly spacious interior, challenging the conventional expectations of a low-slung sedan. While the concept dazzled with gullwing doors at CES, the road-ready version will make some adjustments while retaining the striking front screen.

As the Japanese automaker looks ahead to the production model, details such as the car’s official name are yet to be finalized. However, designer Toshinobu Minami hinted at the possibility of a more imaginative and original name, breaking away from the generic “Saloon” designation.

With the recent discontinuation of the Honda e hatchback, the Saloon aims to position itself as Honda’s new flagship EV, showcasing a blend of innovation, distinctive design, and a commitment to redefining electric mobility.
