Kia has issued a recall for more than 100,000 Sportage and Carnival models in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall is prompted by concerns related to the roof molding, with the potential for detachment that could pose an increased risk of a crash.
Notably, the recall affects Sportage and Carnival models manufactured in separate factories. The Sportage recall covers 40,426 vehicles from 2023-2023, originating from Georgia, while the Carnival recall spans 60,623 vehicles from 2022-2024, produced in Korea. Despite the recall encompassing a significant number of vehicles, only one percent are estimated to have the defect, according to NHTSA documents.
The issue revolves around the roof molding, which may become loose or detach from the vehicle. This detachment could be attributed to interference between the roof molding retaining clips and excessive roof panel sealer or improper installation during the assembly process.
Affected vehicle owners will receive notifications by mail in March, but they can proactively check the NHTSA recall website to confirm if their vehicles are impacted. Kia owners with affected vehicles are encouraged to visit a Kia dealership for a complimentary inspection. If necessary, the dealership will repair or replace the roof moldings to address the defect. Kia’s commitment to addressing these issues underscores its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers.
