Madrid Secures Long-Term Deal to Join Formula 1 Calendar from 2026

In a groundbreaking development, Madrid is set to become a prominent fixture on the Formula 1 calendar from 2026, following a new long-term deal. The Spanish Grand Prix, held at the IFEMA MADRID circuit, is poised to offer a unique and accessible experience for fans, as well as position itself as one of the most sustainable events in the F1 season.

IFEMA MADRID, located just five minutes from the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez airport, is strategically positioned to accommodate over 110,000 fans per day across various seating options. Plans are underway to expand the circuit’s capacity to 140,000 per day during the initial phase of the agreement, making it one of the largest venues in the Formula 1 calendar.

The circuit’s proximity to public transport, including Metro, train, and city lines, is set to make the Spanish Grand Prix one of the most accessible races for fans. Approximately 90% of attendees are expected to utilize public transportation for easy access to the paddock, fostering a sustainable approach to event logistics.

Aligning with Formula 1’s commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2030, IFEMA MADRID has demonstrated its dedication to environmental sustainability. The circuit has reduced carbon emissions significantly over the last five years and transitioned to 100% certified renewable energy across its exhibition halls. Moreover, any temporary structures erected for the race will be constructed using recyclable materials.

The comprehensive proposal from IFEMA MADRID received widespread support from national, regional, and local government, as well as key stakeholders, including the Regional Government of Madrid, the Madrid City Council, and the Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the Grand Prix, fan activations are planned in Downtown Madrid, creating engagement opportunities with local businesses and schools. The event is expected to contribute approximately €450 million to the city’s economy annually.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed excitement about this new chapter for F1 in Spain, commending IFEMA MADRID for their fantastic proposal. The President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, highlighted the focus on environmental sustainability in the event plans, aligning with FIA’s vision for Net Zero carbon by 2030.

Jose Vicente de los Mozos, President of the Executive Committee of IFEMA MADRID, expressed enthusiasm for hosting a Grand Prix that combines sport and entertainment while delivering a memorable experience for fans and teams.

The President of the Region of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, and the Mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, both conveyed their satisfaction and anticipation for the event, emphasizing the economic and transformative impact it would have on Madrid’s global standing. Madrid’s entry into the Formula 1 calendar marks a significant milestone, positioning the city as a hub for major international events.
