1997 Honda Civic Hatchback Gets Modern Makeover After a 13-Year Hiatus

 

The resurgence of older automotive enthusiasts has led to a wave of comeback builds, with individuals returning to their roots after financial challenges, family growth, or simply taking a break. Junior Ugalino’s 1997 Honda Civic hatchback is a notable example, marking his return to car building after a 13-year hiatus. Inspired by his childhood dream car, Ugalino aimed to create a clean and modern restomod.

The project took a contemporary turn, departing from the LS/VTEC setup to explore the world of K swaps. Ordering a JDM K20 from HMotors, Ugalino embraced user-friendly advancements and modern solutions for performance and management. Noteworthy additions included a universal tucked radiator, K-Tuned swap solution parts, Hondata’s KPro, and Rywire Motorsport Electronics’ plug-and-play harnesses.

The engine bay underwent significant refinement, featuring seam welding, cleanup, and an OBD Welding Werks engine bay filler plate kit to cover unused factory holes. Jspec Customs of Honolulu handled the 12-month body reconditioning and color change to Fathom Blue Pearl.

Performance enhancements included a big tube header, GReddy SP exhaust, and 60mm Hayward individual throttle bodies. The suspension received an overhaul with Strange Engineering coil overs, Hyperco springs, and various Hardrace components. The chassis underwent a five-lug conversion, enabling the installation of CE28 Club Racers with Spoon twin block calipers.

The exterior retained a clean appearance with Civic Type R-inspired upgrades, including headlights, mirrors, side moldings, and a Seeker adjustable wing. A Mode Parfume bumper with a carbon fiber lip refreshed the front end.

The interior, bathed in glossy deep blue, embraced simplicity with a stripped-down look. A Cusco roll cage, Bride Zieg XL seats, Renegade harnesses, Momo wheel, and K-Tuned billet shifter contributed to the performance-oriented cabin. Analog roots were preserved with an EM1 gauge cluster and AEM gauges.

Ugalino acknowledged that the project evolved into a comprehensive build with new parts, reflecting his end goal of creating a Civic EK with a modern twist. Despite the journey’s challenges, the 1997 Honda Civic hatchback stands as a testament to the enduring passion of automotive enthusiasts returning to the scene.
