Back in June 2021, the motorcycle world caught a glimpse of the Zontes three-cylinder engine through early pictures and details. Fast forward to the present, and the anticipation has culminated in the unveiling of two near-production prototypes, slated to hit showrooms by the close of 2024.

Originally conceptualized to span a range of sizes from 600cc to 1,000cc, the Zontes triple has now materialized as a 699cc middleweight option, propelling two distinct models: the Zontes 703F adventure bike and the Zontes 703RR sportbike.
Both iterations made their debut at EICMA in Milan as prototypes, signaling an imminent production kick-off before the year’s end. Unlike its predecessors confined to the Chinese market, these three-cylinder marvels are poised for a global rollout. This strategic move is in response to criticisms levied at Zontes for its single-cylinder-dominated lineup, lagging behind competitors embracing parallel twins. By adopting a three-cylinder engine, Zontes aims to assert its dominance, albeit in terms of cylinder count.

While initially touted as a contender for China’s first three-cylinder motorcycle, Zontes now faces formidable competition. Benelli’s resurgence with the TNT 899, manufactured in China, and CFMoto’s unveiling of a 675cc three-cylinder engine for the upcoming 675SR sportbike have altered the landscape.
Technical specifications for both the 703F and 703RR remain somewhat scarce. However, Zontes asserts a peak power output of 100 hp at 9,000 rpm and 63 lb.-ft. of torque at 7,200 rpm for the adventure-oriented 703F. Moreover, Zontes anticipates full Euro 5+ type approval for the engine, ensuring compliance with stringent emissions regulations worldwide. Notably, the 703F boasts an alloy chassis, swingarm, and Brembo radial-mount brake calipers, coupled with a wheel combination hinting at formidable off-road capabilities.

In terms of design, the 703F deviates from conventional adventure bike aesthetics, eschewing the ubiquitous “beak” for a sleek, angular profile. The tall, imposing screen crowns a bluff nose, accentuated by sharp, straight lines intersected by crisp folds.
The 703RR, on the other hand, caters to the adrenaline-seeking rider with a higher state of engine tune. Zontes claims a peak power output of 110 hp at 11,000 rpm, albeit at the expense of torque, registering 55 lb.-ft. at 8,600 rpm.

In conclusion, the introduction of the Zontes 703F and 703RR triples signifies a significant leap forward for the brand, both technologically and strategically. By embracing the power of three cylinders, Zontes aims to carve its niche in the fiercely competitive middleweight motorcycle segment.
