The 2024 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP has taken a leap forward in technological advancement with the introduction of Ohlins’ groundbreaking SmartEC3 semi-active suspension system. This collaboration between Honda and Ohlins marks a significant milestone, making the Fireblade SP the first production motorcycle to feature the cutting-edge electronic suspension technology.

While electronic suspension is not entirely new in the world of motorcycles, the SmartEC3 system sets itself apart by continuously optimizing damping characteristics based on various inputs, including bike and rider behavior. Ohlins has provided detailed insights into the functionality of this innovative suspension system.
The SmartEC3 system offers riders four distinct algorithms or riding modes – Sport, Track, Rain, and Manual. These modes allow riders to personalize their experience by adapting the suspension to different riding conditions. The inclusion of Ohlins’ OBTi interface empowers riders to fine-tune specific aspects of the bike’s characteristics, such as support in braking, initial acceleration, weight transfer, and cornering grip.

Drawing inspiration from MotoGP rear ride height devices, the SmartEC3 suspension system enhances performance through a lowered center of gravity during initial acceleration. This is achieved through an updated acceleration parameter, providing riders with improved control and enhanced overall performance.
The physical suspension components featured on the 2024 CBR1000RR-R SP include a 43mm S-EC3 (SV) NPX USD fork and TTX36 EC shock. Both components utilize Ohlins’ innovative ‘spool valve’ design, aimed at enhancing rider comfort. In comparison to traditional needle valves, the spool valve design incorporates a pressure compensation chamber to balance forces applied to the damper’s actuator, resulting in quicker adjustments and improved overall speed of response.
Robert Brinkmark, Director of Sales and Marketing at Ohlins Racing, expressed pride in the SmartEC3 suspension technology, stating, “SmartEC3 suspension technology represents another engineering breakthrough that enables riders to be at one with their bikes, leading to superior performance, control, and excitement. We were very proud to unveil this impressive achievement in conjunction with the introduction of Honda’s exciting new Fireblade SP.”
